Audio vs MIDI
Audio is a recording of actual sound waves (MP3 WAV AAC). Audio contains the sound itself. If you record someone singing, the audio file stores the singer's voice exactly as it was recorded.
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) does not contain sound. It contains data such as: Which note was played, When it started, How long it lasted, How hard it was played (velocity), Pedal movements, Instrument changes. Think of MIDI like digital sheet music.
For example, if you play middle C on a keyboard, MIDI might store:
- Note C4 pressed at time 0, velocity 90
- Note C4 released at time 1.2 seconds
- No actual piano sound is stored.
