Audio vs MIDI

Audio is a recording of actual sound waves (MP3 WAV AAC). Audio contains the sound itself.

MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) does not contain sound. It contains data such as: Which note was played, When it started, How long it lasted, How hard it was played (velocity), Pedal movements, Instrument changes. Think of MIDI like digital sheet music.

For example, if you play middle C on a keyboard, MIDI might store:

  • Note C4 pressed at time 0, velocity 90
  • Note C4 released at time 1.2 seconds
No actual piano sound is stored.

So, a MIDI track are instructions sent to a sound generator (virtual instrument or hardware synth)

Most modern music production software (like Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, or Cubase) uses both: MIDI to control virtual instruments, and audio to record vocals, guitars, and the final mix. For example, in a song project:

  • The piano track might be MIDI controlling a virtual piano.
  • The bass track might be MIDI controlling a virtual bass.
  • The vocal track is audio recorded with a microphone.
  • The guitar track is audio recorded through a mic or audio interface.



Stem separation tools
