Windows installation

A common issue when installing Windows 11 on a Dell Latitude (or many modern laptops) is that the installer doesn’t show the disk, it usually means Windows doesn’t have the correct driver to see the storage controller.

Also, after Windows has been installed, in the Windows Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE), the first setup menu, the Wi-Fi networks could not appear because the wireless driver isn’t installed yet.

Storage Drvers:

  • Go to the Dell Support website: https://www.dell.com/support/home
  • Enter your Dell Latitude service tag (or select your model).
  • Navigate to Drivers & Downloads → Storage → Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver and Application.
  • Download the .exe version of the driver.
  • Extract the Driver Files (The .exe file you downloaded from Dell is an installer, meant to be run inside a full Windows environment. It’s not directly usable by the Windows setup program). This is why we need to extract the files:
  • Double-click the downloaded .exe file.
  • When prompted, choose Extract instead of Install.
  • Select a destination folder on your computer to extract the files.
  • Copy the extracted folder to your Windows 11 installation USB drive.

Load the Driver During Windows 11 Installation

  • Insert the Windows 11 installation USB into your Dell Latitude and boot from it.
  • Proceed with the installation until you reach the "Where do you want to install Windows?" screen.
  • Click on Load driver.
  • Browse to the folder on the USB drive where you copied the extracted Intel RST driver.
  • Select the appropriate driver file and load it.
  • In case of the "Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver and Application" the appropriate folder is:
  • Drivers/production\Windows10-x64\19041\Drivers\VMD
In the right folder we should see files like (.inf, .sys, .cat).
  • Your internal storage drive should now appear in the list of available drives.

Wi-Fi drivers: In a similar way as it's been done for the storage drivers, we can install the Wi-Fi drivers:

  • Go to Dell’s support site: https://www.dell.com/support/home
  • Enter your Latitude model or service tag.
  • Go to Drivers & Downloads → Network → Wireless.
  • Download the appropriate Windows 11 (or Windows 10 64-bit) Wi-Fi driver.
